Base on my mom's recipe, a Vegetarian Caprese Sandwich is commonly made of baguette or ciabatta rolls, fresh ripe tomatoes or even sundried ones on top of fresh mozzarella cheese, garnish by basil leaves which gives off a fresh slightly sweet peppery aroma, mixed with a balsamic glaze which gives off a slightly sour mush flavor and we can tie all of it off by adding olive oil and pepper to make the flavors come out more.
This Sandwich is perfect for picnics, parties or just pack lunches as it is so easy to make, pack and bring with you.
The ingredients of Vegetarian Caprese Sandwich are listed below, including any alternatives we can substitute if we cannot get the right ingredients, according to my mom's Recipes, cheers!
First is we are going to need a whole baguette or ciabatta rolls. Next is sundried tomatoes, but if there isn’t any, we can always get fresh tomatoes, then roast or fry it. Following ingredient is basil leaves, preferably fresh ones, if there aren’t any, green leaf lettuce works. Then we add some extra virgin olive oil. Another addition is green or red peppers. After we are going to add mozzarella cheese, the vegetarian one but if we could not find one, cheddar, gouda, or provolone can work as well. And last but not the least is adding balsamic glaze or if we cannot get any, balsamic vinegar can work too.
We all want to be healthy, who does not want to be right? So, we watch what food we eat but sometimes we still go for the unhealthy foods because cooking and preparing healthy ones takes time and we are tired, or sometimes we just want to eat what we want, like pizza, tacos, burgers and many more out there. So, we come back to the question, is a Vegetarian Caprese Sandwich healthy? My short answer is yes, and why? Because of its ingredients:
starting with the bread, baguettes has low fat content and the alternative mentioned above is ciabatta rolls which if you buy the whole grain version is rich in calcium and fiber that helps with digestion, the next one is sundried tomatoes which are rich in vitamins, antioxidants and natural minerals, following it is basil leaves which are also rich in nutrients that is good for our stomach, then we have the virgin olive oil which is also rich in anti-inflammatory compounds and antioxidants, additionally, peppers are a good source for Vitamin C, and adding a vegetarian mozzarella to the bunch which are free from some allergens is a good combination, lastly is balsamic glaze which is known to promote digestion, reduces blood sugar, helps in losing weight and many more benefits. So that’s why I say “Yes, its healthy”.
A lot of stories are out there from where the Caprese Sandwich originated but we can all say
that its Italian
according to the top results from google, additionally if we google “caprese word meaning”,
google will return a result of; adjective : caprese, denoting a salad of fresh
mozzarella, tomatoes and basil, and origin : of capri.
Furthernore, according to merriam-webster, under its etymology section :
Italian, is short for insalata caprese, literally, salad in the manner of
Capri.
So where exactly is Capri? It’s a city in Naples, Italy, which circles back to “Italian”. So we can conclude that its from Italy for sure.
